Charles Bukowski quotes on Women, Love and Sex

Charles Bukowski’s attitude towards women attracted criticism from some quarters.  His views and relationships with them seemed fraught with contradictions and they were often complex.  In a strange way, that was maybe one reason why Bukowski was able to inject so much humor into his writing on women.

Disfigured by extreme acne and the treatment given for it and troubled by a difficult home life, the young Charles Bukowski’s love life was almost non-existent.  He didn’t lose his virginity until he was 24 years old.  But when he started finding fame in middle age, he relished the attention that  women began to give him and attempted to make amends for the drought of his youth.

This came to an end when he decided that he was in serious danger of making a fool of himself and he settled down to marry Linda Lee Beighle.  Below are my Charles Bukowski quotes on women, love and sex.

“It's possible to love a human being if you don't know them too well.”

"If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind.”

"there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
the hands of a clock.”

"People with no morals often considered themselves more free, but mostly they lacked the ability to feel or love."

"I remember awakening one morning and finding everything smeared with the color of forgotten love."

"Any asshole can chase a skirt, art takes discipline."

"Whores are natural"

"Many a good man has been put under the bridge by a woman."

"American women drove hard bargains and the ended up looking the worst for it. The few natural American women left were mostly in Texas and Louisiana."

“Sex is interesting, but it's not totally important. I mean it's not even as important (physically) as excretion. A man can go seventy years without a piece of ass, but he can die in a week without a bowel movement.”

“Show me a man who lives alone and has a perpetually clean kitchen, and 8 times out of 9 I'll show you a man with detestable spiritual qualities.”

"Sex is kicking death in the ass while singing."

"there is always one woman to save you from another and as that woman saves you she makes ready to destroy"

"But now and then, a woman walks up, full blossom, a woman just bursting out of her dress…a sex creature, a curse, the end of it all."

"I have been treated better than I should have been---not by life in general nor by the machinery of things but by women."

“There are worse things than being alone,”

"I loved you like a man loves a woman he never touches, only writes to, keeps little photographs of."

"Anything is a waste of time unless you are fucking well or creating well or getting well or looming toward a kind of phantom-love-happiness."

"Love is a form of prejudice. I have too many other prejudices."

“I would be married, but I'd have no wife, I would be married to a single life.”

"A love like that was a serious illness, an illness from which you never entirely recover."

"Gradually I came to realize that my understanding of women goes only as far as the pleasure is concerned."

"Real loneliness is not necessarily limited to when you are alone."

"When a hot woman meets a hermit one of them is going to change."

"being alone never felt right. sometimes it felt good, but it never felt right."

"you boys can keep your virgins
give me hot old women in high heels
with asses that forgot to get old. "

  2. @kate - He was a great writer, whatever his faults as a person. I find myself admiring him, just for surviving the trials of his life, of which there were so many!

  4. It's scary how much I relate to this guy. Not through experiences but because of the attitude. I can learn a lot while I'm still young.

  9. He lived in the Holy Trinity area of San Pedro, we where neighbors. We could see right into his back yard. Everyone in the area knew him. And late at night we could all hear him and his wife...She still lives in the same house..He shopped at McCowans Market on 1st and Bandini...What did he buy.. We all knew...Maybe those late night fights is what made him write so well. Or was it a druken haze..No one said Hi to him for fear of him barking at you....But what ever was in him, it made him a writer.....No doubt...
