The Best of Bukowski on Youtube

INTRODUCTION

Youtube is such a wonderful thing!  Before it existed, we often didn’t know how many of our heroes moved, looked like and sounded.  It wasn't easy as there's a lot of great stuff out there, but here is my pick of the best Charles Bukowski Youtube clips.

"DINOSAURIA, WE" READ BY CHARLES BUKOWSKI

Stunning recitation by Bukowski of his poem, “dinosaura, we”, taken from my favourite poetry book of his, “The Last Night of the Earth Poems", with footage of Bukowski walking through some seedy Los Angeles streets.

"THE LAUGHING HEART" BY TOM WAITS
Tom Waits gives a heart felt and powerful reading of the Charles Bukowski poem, “The Laughing Heart”.  Waits was and is a big fan of Bukowski and one can detect the influence of the poet and author in some of Waits’ lyrics.

BUKOWSKI LASHES OUT AT LINDA
An unforgetable Bukowski Youtube clip.  The now infamous, but still shocking footage taken by Barbet Schroeder of Bukowski lashing out at his partner, Linda.  Bukowski demonstrates his irrational, aggressive and unpredictable streak.  Linda later blamed his behaviour on alcohol.  This clip is often cited as proof of Bukowski’s misogyny, the accusations of which I write about in one of my Hubpage articles.

"BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS - THE OPENING SEQUENCE"
One of my personal favorite Charles Bukowski Youtube clips and a must-watch film for all Bukowski fans in my opinion, the opening section of the great documentary: “Bukowoski: Born into this”.  My favourite bit is Bukowski swigging from a bottle then blaring “WHAT DO YOU WANT, MOTHERFUCK!” at the camera.  The use of the Beethoven piano music for the opening sequence is kind of beautiful and in keeping with Bukowski’s love of classical music.

BUKOWSKI TALKS ABOUT HOW HE LOST HIS VIRGINITY
Charles Bukowski’s anecdote of how he lost his virginity to a “300 pound whore” when he was 24 years old.  According to him, they had drunken sex together and in the morning he wrongly accused her of stealing from him.  He threw her out.  But later he realized he’d made a mistake and felt guilty.  How factually true the story is, I don’t know, but it is a Bukowski Youtube clip that shows the writer at his most charming and entertaining.  “She was the first woman who ever liked me,” he says at one point.

BUKOWSKI ON PEOPLE

Another of Barbet Schroeder’s short clips, filmed during delays in the making of the movie, Barfly, due to funding problems.  Charles Bukowski expresses how he feels about the human race, doing it very succinctly and elegantly.  Also some footage of Bukowski reading poetry.

CHARLES BUKOWKSI LEAVES 'APOSTROPHES'

A very drunken and disorientated Charles Bukowski walks out of Apostrophes, a late night French intellectual chat show, or rather, he’s helped to stumble out of the studio after misbehaving towards the other guests.

"THE MAN WITH BEAUTIFUL EYES" ANIMATION

Charles Bukowski's poem, "The man with the beautiful eyes" from his book, 'The Last Night of the Earth Poems'.  This is a wonderful piece of Bukowski Youtube animation to accompany a wonderful poem.

CHARLES BUKOWSKI READS: "THE NIGHT I KILLED TOMMY"
“The night I killed Tommy”.  Taken from the Bukowski at Bellevue DVD/video and recorded in 1970.  Bukowski seems introverted and self-conscious, a long way from the persona he used for some of his later readings.
